MLJM John Mayer Radio NEEDS YOU!!

This is particularly important to my fellow John Mayer site admins.
I'm just trying to pull us all together and have a bit of fun at the same time.

If you're interested in doing a parody ad, a poem, a short song.. whatever... I'll probably be up for it. I can't guarantee a yes.. can you imaging the shit that would get on if I did!

So go forth and be creative. I'll give you all a few weeks to submit.

Intelectualising Music

The Science Of Music - With Dr. Bob

Many people in the world speak to me on an almost daily basis. These people range from young to old, decrepit to old, and chinese to old. Needless to say, some of the people I talk to are old. Now the problem with this is that contemporary music tends NOT to be old. It is widely believed that things from two different groups cannot truly integrate. This, of course, is entirely false.

The key to integration is to find the common links, and then bend them to your will. "What are the common links between old people and contemporary music?", you may ask. Well it's just lucky for you that you asked me. Now you see, contemporary music often has 'lyrics' which is a fancy way of saying 'shit words that sometimes rhyme'. Old people don't particularly like, nor understand these 'lyrics'. This is because old people have an older, slower, and more combersome vocabulary (A 'legacy' vocabulary, if you will).

So for those of you who cannot see the plain link between the two which I have just described, let me point it out to you

Old people would like contemporary music if it used big words.

Or, for the older audience

Overly aged members of society, both here and abroad, encompasing all who believe that the sound generated by the youth with their electric guitars, and over-sized percussion implements, which create a deafening abomination before all those who are encompased by this statement does not abide by the rules, regulations, and theoritical teachings laid down in years gone by to define that which is, and should always be thought of as 'music'; would be more inclined towards listening to such a deafening racket if the collective vocabularium of the youthfull layabouts creating said din were to increase in size and complexity, allowing for words which mean mostly the same as their shorter counterparts, but are extended in length beyond said counterparts.

My review of "Cynthia"...a personal rant

My lovelies, let me tell you a bedtime story about a wicked wicked girl. Her name, is "Cynthia"

"Cynthia" ...oh my where do I start. You see, "Cynthia", Why is she dragging herself where she doesn't belong? Stepping on toes. Crossing lines. Horrid things she does. And why am I upset? Because it's my world she's trying to get herself into. And frankly, poorly, poorly done. I can't fathom being her.

It all started awhile back when I met "Cynthia" on "MyPlace"...and she became a "Juan Sayer Slut". We grew as friends and she found out something about me. Then she had to do it too. Unfortunately for "Cynthia" She'll never accomplish what she wants to. And now, she's coming after me. Why am I the victim of her jealousy. Tsk Tsk, green doesn't look good on you.

Saying things about me that I happen to find out about, attacking my character. Frankly, "Cynthia" I don't give a damn. So yes, it's true. I despise you. Don't care for you. Is that enough of a "bone" thrown at you? Shallow Hal. Oh let me plug our site 15 times, since that's the only thing I'm here for J-MAYER.ORG. Because we all know Tink is a shamless plug whore.

People are emailing "Cynthia" and telling her that I don't care for her. That she's angering me with what she's doing. Grapevine rumors...don't you just love those?

Ahhh it feels good to get that out. Now she will know how much I can't stand her.

As for "Cynthia" I await the hate mail. Bring it on. Cuz it has been broughten.

MLJM Radio

MLJM Radio

Hi there! I hope this blog finds you all healthy and happy. You all seem to be having a ton of fun, what with John touring and all! Super exciting stuff. As some of you may know, I myself will be unable to attend a Mayer gig this year. But I'm sure I'll catch him next time round.

So, seeing as I will be missing out this time, I have been finding other ways to amuse and surround myself with Mayer-ness. One of these ways is through MLJM Radio. Which is, in essence, an online radio station that others can stream through their Winamp or RealPlayer player. And consists mainly of John Mayer, and a little (very little) talking from yours truly.

unfortunately, I can't run it all the time, this is simply due to the fact that no matter how much I love the Mayer, and all the awesome people I meet because of him, I also lead a full life outside this computer (amazingly) and contrary to popular belief, I'm not really the nerd you all think I am. I'm just a chick with high-speed internet.

So anyway, I will be continuing to broadcast when I have the time. I will be notifying you all through Johns MySpace and will be taking requests from his page also. But before the next broadcast, I would like you all to tell me what other bands you would like to hear. Not that John isn't awesome, but variety is also nice.

If you have anything you would like me to play of yours (like, I don't know, I song you wrote, a funny poem, or a shoutout to other Mayer fans that are friends of yours) then I will happily accept them, and put them in the playlist. Nothing too inappropriate or unrelated. But this is your station, and I want to include you all as much as I can.

You can contact me here in comments, through my MySpace page : www.myspace.com/reneemay or you can contact me via email: reneemay85@hotmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you all!

CONTINUUM - THE ESSAY...

If you ask me

Ok, So, I’m lying on the floor In my crappy unit with my head pressed against my ten watt base amp (that I use for a computer speaker), literally flooring the radio release of John Mayers ‘Continuum’ album. And these thoughts are running through my head and there’s this one recurring thought that went a little like this:-
“Get a pen”
“No, just lie there. Absorb it. Let it run through you…”
“But you may never have any of these thoughts again! Get a fu*king pen!”

So, I got a pen, and here I am.

Before I start rambling, let me get his out:
I knew strait off the bat, that this album would restore my faith in music. And I knew why. It’s written as an actual album. Not a bunch of songs, but a journey that takes you through your soul. Flowing from one song to the next, never loosing its footing.
I knew this because John had chosen to release it as a full album on the radio. I just love the whole concept of forcing people to listen without skipping.

Ok, let’s begin.

The first track was “Waiting on the World to Change” and I’m not going to be reviewing it. This is not because I dislike the song , but simply because I’ve heard it so many times that I have severe hook-burn, and I’m afraid I just wouldn’t be able to look at it with a fresh perspective. John warned us that this would happen… And I didn’t listen.

So, onto “I don’t trust myself”
I cannot express how deeply this song hits me. It’s somewhere between asleep and awake. It’s the bass in my stomach, the vibration in my head, the buzz of the nerves in my brain overloading with something not dissimilar from lust.
If you have ever fallen asleep on the couch, and have been naturally awakened at 2:30am upon hearing a song you love, you’ll know what I mean. It sinks deeply into your head, cradling you with its familiar warmth. But it gets better.
OK, here it comes… “Who do you love? Me or the thought of me” (hold it…hold it) “me or the thought of me..?” …ah, it’s gone. And you can’t get it just rewind it, you won’t get that feeling back. Not until next time you let it runs its course.

The next track “Belief”, I was delighted to hear featured work from the amazing Ben Harper. This was like having my cake, eating it, and then finding out if was the cure for death.
The feeling of this song just screams highway driving at night. The moon glistening on the tar…
There is an Amazing riff in this. It seems to bounce in and out of the foreground, weaving you through the song. There are also so many layers. I have a feeling this may be one of those tracks you can listen to 20 times and still manage to find something new. Much like a movie you never tire of.

And now onto “Gravity”. I liked it on ‘Try!’ I liked the version with Pino at Hotel Café, and I love it on this. There is something so very completing about hearing it polished. Like tying up any loose ends and setting it in stone. Loving the back-up vocals. If you don’t feel the soul in this, you don’t have one.

“Heart of life” – When I first heard this song on the Hotel Café recording, I was absolutely dumb-founded by its innocents and grace. The composition is so intuitive and inventive. I remember listening to the twinkling rhythm of the acoustic and it taking me back to a childhood I’m pretty sure I never had. For me, the feeling is autumn, the leaves are falling on your face from the tree above you, as you stare up at the clouds in the sky. Making them into animals in your mind.
Now, in ‘Continuum’ it encompasses all the other elements, but brings it forward a notch by adding an extra dimension, through the lush resonance of a Fender Strat.
There are a few songs that I have come across that have made me go “Wow, I wish I had of thought of that…” This is one of them.
Is it ironic that, at the beginning of this song, the beauty of the sound made me cry a little?

Ok, so “Vultures”. I have loved this song since the get-go. There is something so rich and thick about the melody, which is funny to me, because it is clearly so simplistic.
You can really groove to this tune. And anybody who doesn’t sing along to the line “Testin me, testin me…”, or at least, wants to, is just weird.
This track really captures the blues to me. It would be best heard in a smoky bar, where it’s hard to tell if people are nodding along to the tune, or if they just need some fresh air. Basically what I’m getting it is, this is the ‘Get drunk, Let your hair down, and sway’ edition to the album, and I’m glad it’s in there.

“Stop this Train”… I can se myself really getting this a lot more (lyrically) as I get a little older. For although I feel I can relate, I’m only 20, so there is a good chance I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about.
The thing I found most awesome about this song, is how John has managed to create a melody that sounds so much like a steam train. It just blows my mind. But, yeah, as I said, I’m really looking forward to truly to growing into this song.

“Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”… at a pinch? The most brilliantly written lyrics of John’s music to date. How can one say so much, while only having actually said so very little? It kinda makes me want to push myself a little harder in my own songwriting.
Love Love Love the solo. I would have liked to hear more of it. But I grew up on a diet of guitar. It’s really kinda perfect for the album, and its primary audience.
I also love the physical impacts this song has on me. I find that I am breathing slower and heavier. I love it when music has such an impact, it affects your biology.

How Exciting! “Bold as Love”! Y’know, I’ve seen the album track list, and somehow, I must have forgotten about this. But what a great homage to Hendrix. Finally, someone has picked a song to cover of his that isn’t obvious.
I was actually a little worried when John introduced the track. I thought “Oh, but it’s gonna be a clean recording… will this work?” And then BOOM! From the moment that first chord was struck, it was like “Oh Yeah!, you got it John.” It could have been a disaster, but with just the right sound, it’s a masterpiece.
John, if you happen to be a little lost and ended up here reading this, Well Done Man! I have sooo much respect for you right now, you don’t even know!

“Dreaming with a Broken Heart” was a funny one for me, because due to my own ignorance, I had managed to miss the meaning of the song. And I’m so glad John briefed it in the intro, because now it seems to hold a new place in my heart. Once again, this is another track that I’m gonna have to listen to multiple times before I’ve really heard it all. I love songs like this, because they only ever show you as little or as much as you are prepared to se.

I can’t help but fall for “In repair”. I guess it’s because it’s the one I relate to the most at this point of my life. Another slow one. I really dig the drop in dynamic in the second half of the chorus. And Ahhh… some awesome little solos.
“I’m not together, but I’m getting there” Yep, I’m taking that one with me. Thankyou John.

I’m so glad John ended the album on “find Another You”. Amazingly smooth, super easy to listen to, but interesting enough that you can’t just tune it out.
This song just wraps it up, puts in a twist, and re-connects it with the beginning. Behold! The first ever Mobius Album! This is great for people like me who are big fans of the ‘repeat’ button.

If I had to sum it all up… well, I doubt I can, but I have to. I didn’t come all this way just to buy some gum…

This album spans the best parts of human emotion. It threw me up, down, around and around. Stole my thoughts, made me cry, and then bought me a drink…
You know you’ve found a great album, when it can send you on an odyssey without ever leaving the floor. (except maybe to get a pen)

A weekend living where I do

Indianapolis, Indiana. More specifically...Speedway, Indiana. Aptly named because in the center of the town of speedway is, yes..the Indianapolis motor speedway. This weekend, we are blessed (sarcasm anyone?) with the Allstate 400 (formerly the Brickyrad 400).

Three times a year, we have a fabuous race. In May, the Indy 500. In August, The nascar event with a new name each year. And one more sometime during the year that I can never remember, the forumla one race.

So, I refer to this weekend as "Redneck Mardi Gras." Wait, let me explain.

There are hundreds of tents selling any kind of nascar gear you would want. Food stands selling turkey legs AND corn on the cob. Walking tacos, lemo shakeups and even a small stand over on Georgetown taht sells cocunuts ahped like a monkey filled with the alcoholic beverage of your choice. The only time of year that walking down the street with booze in hand is legal.

Now, what gets this place hopping is the camping. All over speedway. In peoples yards (you can rent out your yard for like 10-20 dollars a car for camping or parking.) So, along the strips which are crawfordsville road and georgetown, there are all these things. As you walk down georgetown to the track, guys WILL ask you "Show us your tits" and hand you beads if you do as the wish. At this point, its not even dusk. So we go along down to the track, around to georgetown. Some random guy is walking by as I comment to my friend that the people driving with loud music make me wanna have sex with them. Random guy stops and says "really?" I look at him and say no. He moves on, grabs the next girl and they go into the port o potty with Larry the Cable guys face on it. Nice...classy. This is Nascar.

On the way back, it is now dark and I have had several alcoholic beverages and spoken to Mara on the cell. Guys are now IN the street walking between the cars asking for boobage. Insanity. Fun.

So today is the race. I'm holed up in my house, refuse to leave because it would take me 10 minutes to go one mile.

On a Mayer note, I ran into a fellow Mayer fan who recognized me from myspace. She was very drunk and WOOOOOOOOing a lot. Looked at me and said THERESA AT J-MAYER DOT ORG!!! JOHN MAYER FU**IN ROCKS!!! WOOOOOOO. I nodded and waved, moving along to the Tony Stewart trailer. Quickly disappearing from her view.

Moral: Even people at Redneck Mardi Gras love John Mayer.

Ahhh my first one

So, you happened to want to read this? Goood. Sit. Stay . I have marshmallows. No, I won't share.

What shall Tink be talking about here? Anything. Everything. Concerts I go to. Things that annoy me from day to day in this crazy world.

Tonights topic-My child and her music.

My lovely 4 year old, Kaitlyn (Katy) informed me tonight that she, not Mayer, she wrote Neon. I know. amazing. She was not even conceived when I first heard it in Georgia in that small club with about 35 other people present. Wow, that's an enigma. But I digress...

Currently, she will sing back those annoying CDs-made-for-kids-by-kids-singing-horrible-renditions-of-surrent-pop-favorites commercials. So she is running around goind "L-O L-O L-O L-O-V-E, You're beautiful...beautiful" And I unknowingly, yes i can be shot for this, started singing Beautiful. She looked at me and says "But mama, you hate James blunt." Why yes, yes I do. Was the only response I could give her.

This is the same child who when was told she wouldnt receive her bath in the evening (she gets them in the morning) drew on herself with marker so she WOULD receive said bath. Smart for a four year old? you ahve no clue. I have a tiny genius on my hands. A Tiny musical genius whom Dela personally (yes, seriously) instructed to start piano and bass lessons because he saw her holding a bass and said she was a natural. Look out world. 2024 Tour. Katy Herr healining with some old guy her mom liked, John Mayer opening.

Music - The scientific way

The Science Of Music - With Dr. Bob

Good evening, fine fellows, and soon to be loyal readers.

Many people may be wondering what it means when one says 'the science of music'. Do I intend to discuss only the particular frequencies and modulations produced in the guise of music, and handily measured on any standard oscilloscope? Will I be discussing the chemical disturbances created in the brain by sound waves which allow you to 'enjoy' particular styles of music, while not 'enjoying' others? Shall I be discussing the histories and origins of so called 'contemporary music'?

It is correct to wonder how I will be approaching the idea of discussing music scientifically, yet nigh impossible for people of your meagre intellect (Oh, don't worry. I'm not calling you stupid. Only stupider than me. Most of the world's populace has far less intelligence than me, however, so try not to let it concern you overly much) to guess, or even understand how I will be approaching the issue. The main issue here is that people have such confused preconceptions about the meanings of words such as "music" and "science". Some people may argue (futile to do so, I may add) that some of the explanations that I offer may not actually seem to be "scientific". This, of course, is incorrect.

I am a scientist. Everything I say is scientific. This is due to my immense amount training and study. Perhaps my only flaw (as I phased out most major flaws back in 1964, in the course of amalgamating my mind with the collective knowledge of bees. This is incredibly dangerous, and should not be attempted by anyone who has more flaws than myself. That is to say, that everyone, upon birth, is more flawed than I am, and continues to gather new flaws throughout life. Regardless, I digress.) is the fact that I am now so scientific that I am almost unable to say anything that does not have the deepest and most profound scientific connotations. Indeed, just in this much of this 'blog' so far, I have revealed the cures to 16 (now 17) medical anomalies. You will quite probably never realise this, as they are also protected by a cryptographic sequence more unbreakable than any use of a 'one use pad' may be. 18.

So be sure that when we next meet, I shall have much to discuss that, however mundane or unrelated it may seem, I assure you is most scientific. Good morrow, my fine readers.

24.

Amber Rubarth @ the Fine Line in Minneapolis

So I've offered to do merch for artists lately. Only for when they come to Minneapolis of course. :-). And when I found out that Amber Rubarth (www.myspace.com/amberrubarth) was coming to the Fine Line I jumped at the chance help, and to go to the show... which was 21+. But since I was going to help the artist I'd not only be getting in, but getting in free. EVEN BETTER.

So I got to the venue and the place sure as hell wasnt packed but there were some people there. Outside I was met by Nick Oz, the guy who was promoting the show. He was really nice and showed me to the table. Amber came out about 10 minutes later looking very cute and happy. She and I talked about the Hotel Cafe and her touring and our common love of Ryan Montbleau's (www.myspace.com/ryanmontbleau) music. The show started at about 10 o'clock. People LOVED her. And so did I. She has a beautiful clear and low voice. Slow sooting music comes out of her mouth and fingers. Near the end of the set she said "I have merch for sale and the table is run by the wonderful Mikaela. And the next song I'm gonna play is called "Underground Angel" and I'd like to dedicate it to Mikaela". I had THE biggest grin on my face. So we sold about 5 cds, which isnt A LOT but Amber seemed fine with it. I got 2 free cd's and had a great night. If Amber is coming to your town and you're ok with helping an artist e-mail her and offer. Tell her that Mikaela told you about her. You'll have an awesome time I promise.

So there's my first entry. How'd I do?

Just Let Go...

If you ask me
If you ask me, It takes a bigger person to stand down and say “sorry, I was wrong” than to harp on for several decades about how they were once right.
If you’re not quite sure what I’m talking about, let me take you back to a dark, scary time of the not-too-distant past that I like to call 1999…

Picture this, the world had finally recovered from the 80’s, grunge (bless its fragile heart) was slowly fading out in the same way it had faded in (through a series of overdoses, suicides and smudged eyeliner) and people who valued their sanity were doing their best to ignore the return of Cher. When suddenly, out from the shadows, behind the inflatable couch, came something resembling music, but missing vital components, and man… it wasn’t pretty.
I’m referring, of course, to Guns ‘n’ Roses… revised.

Yes, once again, the delightful Axle Rose, armed with the power of arrogance, stuns the world with his power gibberish. After acting like a smug fuck the first time around (and as a result, loosing Slash. aka: the talented one) He came back for another romp around the proverbial block with his finest gem of incoherence, “OH MY GOD” featured on the “End of Days” soundtrack.

Oh my god indeed. This 3minute, 42 second abomination is not only an insult to the legend that is Guns ‘n’ Roses, but an insult to music itself. At first I was just bothered by the aimless screaming, until I realized it was protecting me from something much worse. It was at that moment I heard every great guitarist of times past, simultaneously roll over in their graves. I’m not what you would call a traditionalist, but I do believe a song should contain one or more of the fundamental elements of sound, to be considered music. And in this track… well, they didn’t even try.

FU*K YOU Axle Rose! You don’t get it, you never did. Go do some coke and leave the free world the hell alone!

Love, Tiff
